Rejistanian music

I mentioned that $searchengine occasionally suggests terms which make for good topics. Today, someone found this little place on the internet by searching for “conlang native music”. I am not sure what he was linked to, but I think adding some native rejistanian music is in order. As such, I decided to post a WorldVision Song Contest song. ICly, it is by Tekneluru’ny ji sikire’ny (dreamers and developpers)

EDIT: The song is available here.

oleni’het: poem

Example: Oda’tan tenva mje mi’vetix alnany oleni’tan tani ulsiu.
Sentence clear one 3S-mean AUGCMP poetry nation anything.
One clear sentence means more than the poetry of a nation.

I have to admit that I dislike poetry. It bugs me not to understand things. It bugs me even more when a someone intentionally frustrates people by being as unclear as possible. It bugs me even more when people communicate about their feelings pointlessly (sorry, I do not care how you felt when you saw that sunrise as you are DEAD and have been since a few centuries). Thus, the poems, which I like are of the childish variant. As such, I have not thought a lot about rejistanian poetry, let alone written some… but I expect it to be using rhyme or alliteration of the stressed syllables (ie: Tykal‘het mi’kylan, mi’ki , mi’ki’kasnan, mi’ki’kirkaju, mi’ki’kaju skavu’he’il, het. This means: The tiger waits. It knows that it will hunt, follow and fight its enemy). Rejistanian poetry is not the formalized style which is popular here in academic circles, school classes and nowhere else, but it is an art which thrives on improvisation. Not writing an eternal poem that will be remembered by generations is the goal, but writing something very fitting for now is.

I tried translating the Sheli poem by David J. Peterson a few times, but so far, I failed. I am not good at this kind of thing.

\begin{rant}BTW: Why is it so freaking hard to get a mobile phone which does not suck‽ These things accumulate feature after feature but they fail at the basics: usability, big fonts (and that means everywhere, not in a few screens so you can offer the phone for the old and the visually impaired, but as soon as you leave these, you have to navigate by memory because the fonts are 3 pixels tall), clear contrast, good voice quality, phonebook, sending and receiving SMS (preferably without the disease that is T9) and either distinct or customizable ringtones (that Nokia tune is so horribly overplayed).

Apparently, it is. No, I do not want an i(Diot)Phone with more features than sense, or something with keys, which only a particularly small amoeba can use. I had the perfect phone (well, in retrospect, I was angry about the bad voice quality at that time), but then, it deprecated and no longer works with modern SIMs and the people in cell phone stores laugh at me when I ask for something like it. Have the 90s really been the only time when good cellphones were made? Seriously‽\end{rant}

This is yet another song, which I want to translate into rejistanian: “Das Herz ist ein Muskel in der Größe einer Faust” by “Früchte des Zorns“. I actually discovered Früchte Des Zorns only due to this specific song. The title is a wonderful deconstruction of the metaphor of the heart and the text a wonderful ode to living. It is one of the most poetic songs I know despite its rather direct speech, or rather because it conveys its meaning without having to resort to impenetrable thickets of things with latin names, which we were supposed to learn in German class.

Please note that I did not translate it into English not even mentally. I went from German directly into Rejistanian. I translate the rejistanian text into English. When I deviated in terms of meaning too much, I added a truer translation in square brackets.

*unfortunately, the metaphor ‘heart’ translates badly into rejistanian, where the equivalent word “demna’het” is located in the stomach.

It does not rhyme, but it was created using only existing words. With apologies to Rick Astley:

Edit: Some reactions came via IRC:

<@Starblaydia> ‘We are not foreign in the area of love. You know the social
conventions and I do as well.’ XD
<+Rejistania> well, rejistanian does express things a bit strange at times
<@Starblaydia> little bit, yes

I think that it is important to realize that our natlangs do that just as much. We grew up in a specific set of oddities and can only react to that either by acceptance (or ignorance) or by consciously confronting it with a system that is differently strange. And constructing these differently strange systems is one of the things which make me conlang.

< B-rat> a language is complete when you can rick roll people in it

I like that definition of completeness.

Xilat mi’hiju (the sky is cloudy) and its negation are about the only times when this word is used as a state verb. Apart from that, the adjective refers to clouds and the noun, well, is explained in the topic pretty well already. The word is used in a previous posting already. Namely in the song “A la barikadoj”. Which made me remember that I never actually got around to record it. Which I did now. Listen at your own risk.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t realize that audacity *bleep*ed up so royally!

My productivity has reached rock-bottom and decided that it was a great plan to use a jackhammer, my plan to sing Still Alive for y’all was foiled by my cough. The fora, I procrastinate in lack lekie threads, and while the idea of a Stroop test in the respective conlang of a person might be an interesting idea to test the fluency of the conlanger and maybe give a bit more relevance to the idea of conlangs, I am not feeling eloquent enough at the moment to make an actual posting about this… so I decided that I was desperate enough to share some old rejistanian music with you. The song, which I only know as Al la barikadoj to be exact.

It is in very colloquial rejistanian. But then, these people are anarchists, they will consider the juniversiti rejistaniha just as much unwanted authority as the rest. It is also not a specific translation of the esperanto version, I had to take liberties and thus mixed themes from the English and German translation in as well.
